ENABLING PV Nigeria

Market analysis, profitability calculations and B2B seminars for the development of photovoltaic markets in Nigeria

Nigeria is Africa's most populous country and third largest economy. It is also a leading country in Africa in terms of crude oil exports, which has fueled the country's fastest-growing economy and urbanization in recent decades. Nearly half of Nigerian citizens live in cities and generate a correspondingly high energy demand. However, under-investment in energy infrastructure in the past has resulted in only 40% of urban and 10% of rural residents having access to electricity. Currently, Nigeria has less than 13 GW installed grid capacity, of which less than 4 GW are operationally reliable. This is offset by an estimated demand of more than 10 GW.

Nigeria has extensive potential for renewable energy development. The government has formulated its expansion targets in a roadmap and launched a series of market launch initiatives involving the private sector. The high solar radiation in Nigeria makes PV solutions particularly attractive. At the same time, the government is currently facing major challenges due to the relatively low oil price, which also leads to a very difficult financing of renewable energies.

With support of GIZ Nigeria and the coordinating office of the Nigerian-German Energy Partnership, eclareon and the German Solar Industry Association together with GOPA - INTEC Nigeria, the AHK Nigeria, the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria, and the Nigerian-German Business Association are carrying out the ENABLING PV Nigeria project to provide German and Nigerian solar companies with practical knowledge of the photovoltaic business in Nigeria and to matchmake companies from both countries.

For that

1. an analysis will be carried out of the currently most promising application segments for PV solutions in Nigeria (to be published in first half 2018),

2. an on-line PV calculation tool was designed and published to provide free of charge to potential PV operators / investors in Nigeria to independently calculate the profitability of planned PV investments in PV diesel hybrid solutions,

3. two B2B seminars in Abuja and Lagos were organized in December 2017 to present the market analysis and online tool to Nigerian companies and energy market experts, and to identify further opportunities for collaboration.
